Paper 1. Fundamentals of I.T.
UNIT – I Information Concepts and Computer Appreciation: Defining I.T.,
Information Systems, Data and Information, Representation of information,
Elements of electronic data processing, Types of Processing, Introduction to
Computer h/w and s/w.
UNIT – II Generation and Classification of Computers: Generations of
computer, Classification of computer, Home computers and PCs, Characteristics
of Portables, Micro, Mini, Mainframe, Super computers.
UNIT – III Computer and Communication: Brief introduction of ports of Pcs :
Serial, Parallel, NIC, Power cord, Plug – in, Switches and Bridges, Modem, LAN
card, Ethernet card, Cables and its types, Data Transmission, Use of computer
network, Sharing of files, printer, device / drive, Brief idea of internet, Common
uses of internet : E – mail, Chatting, Surfing.
UNIT – IV I.T. Application: I.T. in Business and industry, I.T. in home and play,
I.T. in education and training, I.T. in entertainment and arts, I.T. in Science and
Engineering, E- Commerce, E-Organizations, Concept of Multimedia, components
of multimedia: Text, Graphics, Animation, Video, multimedia applications, Audio
Signal processing, acquiring and storing Audio Signals, Speech analysis and
recognition.
Paper 2. Office Automation and Management
UNIT – I: The need and importance of Office automation, Role of computer in
Office automation and management, Office automation. CUI, DOS organization,
DOS Commands, Concept of GUI, Basic concept of Windows, Control panel,
Clipboard, Accessories. Word Processing Software: Creating and Saving
documents, Entering, Editing, Moving, Copying and Formatting text, Page
formatting, Finding and replacing text, Spell check and Grammar checking,
enhancing and Editing in document, Indexing , Columns, Tables and feature,
Inserting (Objects, Picture, files etc.), Using graphics, templates and wizard, using
Mail Merge, using WordArt, customizing, MS Word. Designing pages with MS
Publisher, Inserting and Manipulating Objects, Editing Fills and re – coloring
pictures.
UNIT – II : Spread Software: Spreadsheet terminology, organization of the
worksheet area, entering information, editing cells using commands and
functions, moving copying, inserting and deleting rows and columns, formatting
worksheet, printing worksheet, creating charts, modifying and enhancing charts,
using date, time and addressing modes, naming range and using statistical,
mathematical and financial functions, database in a worksheet, creating, sorting,
querying and maintaining the database, multiple worksheets and Macros, working
with objects.
UNIT – III : Presentation Software: Anatomy of a PowerPoint Presentation,
Creating and viewing a presentation, Managing slide shows, navigation through a
presentation, using hyperlinks, advanced navigation with action setting and action
buttons, organizing formats with master Slides, applying and modifying designs,
adding graphics, multimedia and special effects, creating presentation for the
web.
Unit – IV : Office System user interface, Managing security and privacy in the MS
Office system, Sharing documents between office system Components and
different versions of the office system.
Paper 3. Principles of Programming Language
UNIT – I : Importance of programming languages, Brief history and features,
attributes of good programming language, introduction to language translator,
binding and binding time. Language translation issues: Formal translation models
– BNF grammars, regular grammar, FSA.
UNIT – II: Elementary and structured data types, their specification,
representations and implementation of numbers, vectors and arrays, records,
character string, variable size data structures, sets, input output files. Type
checking and type conversion, type equivalence. Encapsulation and information
hiding, sub program.
UNIT – III: Implicit and explicit sequence control, Subprogram sequence control.
Recursive sub programs, exception and exception handlers, Co-routines and
scheduled subprograms, task and concurrent exceptions.
UNIT – IV : Name and reference environments, static, dynamic and block
structures, Local data and local referencing environment, Parameters and their
transmission, Task and shared data storage requirement for major runtime
elements. Program and system controlled storage management, Static and stack
based storage management, fixed size and variable size heap storage
management.
II Semester
Paper 1. Computer Organization and Architecture
UNIT – I : Computer Hardware: Concept of hardware and function of different
part of computer system, Different parts of computer, Input and Output devices,
Driver and Drives in computer.
UNIT – II Computer Software: Introduction to software, System software and
its examples, Features of System software, Application software and its examples,
features of application software, Role of software in I.T.
UNIT – III Processing Unit: Concept of CPU, Control Unit, Arithmetic and Logic
unit, instruction set, Registers, Processor speed, Types of processors, Main
Memory: Storage, Capacity and Main Memory Organization.
UNIT – IV Representation of Data: Digital versus analog, Concept of number
system, Binary, Octal, Decimal, Hexadecimal numbers, Conversion from one form
to another, fractional numbers, signed numbers, Complements, Arithmetic
operations on Binary numbers.
Paper 2. Programming Through ‘C’
UNIT – I C Fundamentals: Scope of C Language, distinction and similarities
with other HLLs, special features and application areas, Character set, identifiers
and keywords, data types, constants, variables and arrays, declarations,
Operators and expressions, Library functions, Statements, Symbolic constants,
Preprocessor directives, formatted input, Output, Basic data types, Type
conversion, Data type Modifiers, Expressions and operators, Precedence of C
operators.
UNIT – II Control Statements: If, If – else, While, do-while, go to, for
Statements, nested control structures, switch, break, continue statements,
comma operator, types of Loops.
UNIT – III Arrays and Structures: Defining – Processing array, passing array to
functions, introduction to multidimensional arrays, arrays and strings, Structures
and unions, defining and processing a structure.
UNIT – IV Functions and File Handling: Basic concepts, declaration and
prototypes, calling and passing arguments to a function by value, recursion, types
of files, file organization, Opening, Reading, Writing and Closing files.
Paper 3. Basics of Computer Networks
UNIT – I Computer Communication: Concept of communication, Data
Communication, data transmission, types of signals in communication, Methods
and modes of data transfer, simplex, half duplex, full duplex.
UNIT – II Networks: Network components, Network topologies, Switching
techniques, three layers of networking components : application Software,
network software, network hardware, Ethernet, FDDI, Wireless Services.
UNIT – III Types of Networks: LAN, WAN, MAN, VAN, types of LAN, LAN
implementation, LAN topologies, LAN devices: repeater, hub, bridges, routers,
gateways, Internetworking: architecture and protocols.
UNIT – IV TCP/IP and Internetworking: Examples of TCP/IP operations, related
protocols, IP address structure, major features of IP, IP datagram, major IP
services, value of transport layer, TCP, major features of TCP, route discovery
protocol, examples of root discovery protocols, IPv6 .
